The organist

Léon KERREMANS was born on 8th October 1957. Originally from Mons, his first encounter with the organ took place in the church of Saint Nicolas. He started his organ studies in 1973 under the able guidance of the titular organist, Adhémar LEBAIN, who supported and guided him throughout his training. He holds this blind organist who is blessed with a heart of gold in great esteem, and owes everything in his musical life to him.

After completion of Greco-Latin classical humanities at the Athénée Royal in Mons, he went to the Conservatoire Royale in Brussels where he obtained, amongst others, the post-graduate diploma in organ in Léopold SLUYS’s class in 1981 and the Chamber Music Grand Prize in 1985.

He continued his studies with Odile PIERRE, former titular organist of the Madeleine, in Paris and obtained the First Award for Excellence in organ in 1985 in her class, at the Conservatoire National de Région de Paris.

Léon KERREMANS regularly performs as a concert organist in Belgium and abroad. He notably gave a recital in Notre-Dame in Paris on July 1, 1985.

Other than the works of Bach which he enjoys playing, he is particularly keen on 19th century repertoire. He also plays contemporary music and enjoys introducing audiences to works by forgotten and little-known masters.

Léon KERREMANS teaches the organ at the Académies de musique in Mont-sur-Marchienne, Montigny-le-Tilleul, Uccle and Schaerbeek.

After more than seven years as organist at Saint Ghislain, he succeeded Paul ERALY in 1987 as titular organist of the KLAIS organ at Saint Servais, Schaerbeek. This is the largest organ in Brussels. He has been president of the Union Wallonne des Organistes since December 1993.

Léon KERREMANS is also an organ advisor. He has supervised restorations of the organs in Saint Rémy, Cuesmes, of the Saint Christoph “Basilica”, Charleroi and, more recently, that of Saint Nicolas, Mons.
